Lahaina, Hawaii, United States
Our ship cruised into the harbor of Maui as the sun crested the islands distinctive volcanic mountains. I had scheduled two tours back-to-back and headed to shore via tender as soon as clearance was obtained. A talkative driver shared amusing anecdotes with us as our bus headed for the Maui Ocean Center. We had a close up look at the rugged, parched mountains of lava along the way. The rugged terrain appeared like parts of Mars. The large, well documented Maui Ocean Centre did not disappoint. Sea creatures indigenous to Maui are housed here: hammer head sharks, stingrays, eels, blue parrot fish, and tiny seahorses (to name but a few) were wonderfully displayed along with coral and marine vegetation.
Later, a walk-a-bout tour with an animated guide proved interesting and fun. We viewed a birthing stone in the ocean, the palce where royalty would first enter the world. A native woman in full traditional clothing chanted at the beginning and at the end of the tour. The island is lush and scenic and seemed less Americanized than The Big Island.
