The departure day has finally arrived. Shortly I will be officially on the road. Funny enough, I’m not nervous. Not a bit, and certainly not as much as my mom. Mom already reminded me 100 times of messaging her every once and a while. Notwithstanding, she’s taking me to the airport, even though I insisted it wouldn’t be necessary.
I’ve always dreamed of long-term travelling. The first step, however, was taken about 6-7 months ago. After reading tons of materials about volunteering abroad, I’ve decided 3 months of volunteering and 3 months of travelling would be it. With a rough idea of a plan, I started negotiating a leave of absence from work. As months went by, we finally came to an agreement. I was granted a leave of absence of approximately 6 months starting February 2010.
And so it goes. Long story short, I’m leaving in a few minutes on a 6-month trip, mainly through Asia and a bit of Africa. My laundry list includes:
– 4 weeks of volunteering in Nepal: teaching and community work
– 4 weeks of volunteering in Thailand: teach english to children
– 5 weeks of volunteering in Kenya: wildlife research, marine mammal studies and community development
– a bunch of travelling through India, Nepal, Bhutan, China (including Tibet), Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia and Kenya
I think that’s it for a first post. I’m not getting into the merits of long-term travelling vis-à-vis a two week vacation or why Asia, which I think is obvious. I also don’t want to bore you with a mile long post. Last but not least, I have to run to the airport. So buckle up, here we go.
