(ChattahBox)—Wednesday marks the 65th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz. And Poland plans to remember the day with a series of events, as part of its International Holocaust Remembrance Day. But a leading Polish Catholic bishop, has sparked outrage with offensive comments made just days before the remembrance of the Nazi Holocaust, which killed nearly six-million Jews, with about half that number sent to their deaths in the ovens of Auschwitz. Bishop Tadeusz Pieronek accused the Jews of using the Holocaust as “a weapon of propaganda, used to obtain benefits which are often unjustified.” Perhaps it’s time for the anti-Semitic Bishop to quietly retire from public life.
During an interview with the conservative Italian Catholic website pontifex.roma.it, Pieronek railed against Jewish “arrogance,” and their misrepresenting of history to claim “victimization.” The hate-mongering Bishop said that the Jews’ money, influence and military dominance made it possible for them to exploit the Holocaust as a propaganda tool, when other ethic groups perished during the Holocaust as well, such as Gypsies and Poles.
“It is undeniable that the greatest number of dead in concentration camps were Jews but there are also Polish gypsies, Italians and Catholics on the list,” he said. Jews monopolized the Holocaust to stop “serious historical debate, free from prejudice and victimization,” said Pieronek.
“This promotes a certain arrogance that I find unbearable,” he said, adding that Israel was using its exploitation of the Holocaust to treat the Palestinians “like animals.”
“The Holocaust as such is a Jewish invention … a day of remembrance must also be set for the many victims of Communism, persecuted Catholics and Christians and so on,” said Pieronek.
After receiving criticism for his statements, Pieronek claimed that the Italian Web site was not “authorized” to publish his remarks. And the Bishop also denied saying that the Holocaust was a “Jewish invention.” But Pieronek held firm on his remarks accusing the Jews of historical manipulation of the Holocaust.
Abe Foxman, head of the Anti-Defamation League in the United States condemned the Bishop’s offensive remarks saying: “It is so sad that 65 years after the liberation of Auschwitz a Polish cleric still engages in anti-Semitic rhetoric because so much Jewish blood was shed on Polish soil.”
