(ChattahBox) – A research group has said that the estimate of the death toll in the Democratic Republic of Congo during their many years of bloody conflict may be wrong.
The original number was given by the International Rescue Committee (IRC), and gave a number of 5.6 million deaths, a shocking number that brought worldwide attention to the battles.
But a new group, the Human Security Report Project, has said that the baseline of natural mortality rates was too low in the estimate.
They claim that by using a new baseline the number is actually closer to 2.8 million.
The IRC denies this claim, and says that they believe their original estimate to be correct.
