(ChattahBox) – North Korea fired off ammunition this morning off of their west coast along a disputed maritime territory with South Korea, prompting the other country to return fire.
According to South Korea’s defense department, North Korean military fired off 30 shells into the water.
South Korea then fired off several warning shots without aiming at a target.
While there were no casualties involved, nor was there any outward threat, many have called the move ‘provocative’ considering the North’s current hostility with the South.
Tension is already high with the disputed ocean territory after the North banned any ships from entering into the region, leaving many suspecting coming military drills and exercises.
But Korea Institute of Defense Analyses analyst, Baek Seung Joo, says it is more than that.
“North Korea is raising tension as a way of reminding others that there is always a possibility of war on the peninsula. The provocation is a message to dialogue partners, urging them to come up with concessions needed to bring it to the table.”
