Lost Location Spotting — Waikiki, Hawaii, United States

Waikiki, Hawaii, United States

The TV series ‘Lost’ is filmed in Hawaii, as a massive fan I was determined to visit at least a few of the filming locations. I’d found this really good website (www.lostvirtualtour.com) that gives details on where various filming locations are.

I quickly took a look on the Internet and noted down some of the filming spots in Waikiki. It seems they have been here quite a lot. The website listed perhaps 20 or so locations in Waikiki alone, all within a fifteen minute walk of the hostel. The Hawaii Convention Centre just over the canal from Waikiki is dressed up a bit to become Sydney Airport in various scenes in ‘Lost’. The place was empty and I could see inside to the escalators that are clearly visible in many episodes. I took some pictures from outside as the place was too empty for me to sneak in unnoticed!

Right next to the Hawaii Convention Centre is the Ala Wai Canal, which is the natural divider between Waikiki and the next suburb. This canal featured predominately in ‘Lost’ when Jin bumped into Son near a canal bridge, this is the ocean side of one of the main road bridges between Waikiki and Ala Moana suburbs. I’d expected this sort of scene to have been shot in a more remote location, but no there it was, right in the middle of tourist Hawaii.

Just up the road is the tall apartment building where ‘Locke’ was thrown out of by his father. Although clearly he didn’t actually fall out of this building, but rather him falling would have been superimposed onto a shot of this building! Once again this was a building on the main road out of Waikiki. I’ve no doubt locals who watch the show have great fun seeing their city every two minutes.

About five minutes away down towards the harbour is the area where ‘Desmond’ and ‘Penny’ had their picture taken for Desmond’s famous picture that he carries around with him on the show. I resisted finding the exact place myself. I’ll save that for if I’m here with other people who can shoulder some of the embarrassment!

Just around the corner was the Harbour Pub, filming location of the scene where Sawyer and Jack’s Dad unknowingly meet in what is supposedly a Sydney bar. Sawyer has just killed someone and Jack’s Dad is an alcoholic. I didn’t go in but from out on the street I recognised it immediately just by looking through the door.

In all honesty I think Lost location spotting would have been more fun had I been with some other ‘Lost’ fanatics, perhaps my mum and youngest brother. On my own I felt like a bit of a weirdo, and had nobody to go ‘wow I remember that bit from the show’ to!

The website I mentioned lists dozens more locations on Oahu, all within a two to three hours drive maximum. I couldn’t quite motivate myself to spend all week visiting them though, I think had I been with another fan I would have probably tried to gain access to YMCA Camp Erdman, also widely recognised as “the others’ town”, where Ben, Juliet and co lived before the Losties arrived on the Island. This is on the west coast of Oahu, and I presume somewhat open to the public, although you’d probably have to convince them you had a genuine need to be there. I’m sure though a small donation to their organisation would have allowed some pictures on the site.
