Shanghai, China
Happy new year everyone! How did you spend your NYE? I actually went all homely, spent the whole day with the family, since I have no friends in Shanghai! ARRGGHH! Anyhow… I had a great NYE, eating, drinking, and more eating. That’s China for you I guess.
S I went to check out the gym near where I live with my cousin yesterday morning. Let’s just say the experience was nothing short of China. Firstly this dude out of nowhere dragged me and her into a tiny windowless room. Then he kept talking about how “awesome” the gym was but he REFUSED to sign me up for casual access, claiming there is “no such thing”, just like how China is the greatest country that no one knows about. He wanted me to sign up for 3 months at least, for a fee of 3000 Yuan, which is around 445 AUD…Nuh-Oh! Fat chance you sneaky *******! I told him I’d like to trial the gym for a day to see the facility, and he eventually agreed, but he kept checking my cousin out throughout the whole “introductory session”, eyes off you effing creep.
Eventually we made our way through a dimly lit empty corridor to the change room, which was even more dim and steamy. It was actually a smelly, seedy change room. The gym itself was pretty pathetic, almost empty, with 5 to 6 instructors standing around, all girls, you know, those thin, perpetually-anorexic looking asian girls. I almost had the urge…to play cruel practical joke on them, and I did XD So I approached one of them, asked her if she could give me a hand, and to spot me with 60KG of bench press. So I knew through the way she was holding the bar that she actually didn’t know how to spot , but she was faking it. Time to play the joke, as I lowered the bar to my chest, I pretended that I couldn’t lift it, and was making an agonizing face and started to “struggle to breath”, she saw me and started to freak out, so much so she started yelling. PfffffHahaha! Oh it never gets old. I quickly put the weight back up and sat up and laughing at her. Then she said something like:”找死啊!”, which means “Do you really want to die that badly?” Oh the crude but yet homely coarse language from Shanghai, it’s been so long I don’t even know how to swear fluently anymore. The best I could do was Brian’s signature “顶你个肺”, but it’s canto, not mando, so it doesn’t carry as much punch to it.
After spending 2 hours in the gym, I felt much better about splurging on food in China. I spent the whole afternoon snacking away with my grandma and showing her all the photos I took in Europe. Then at night time I went to see my grandma on my mum’s side and their family for dinner. They kept asking me to talk in English to my cousin, it was really awkward, so I told them I have accents and people don’t understand my accent that much:P So that was pretty much my NYE, just eating and talking. In fact I didn’t stay up for the count down, too tired and cbf.
I wish everyone a happy new year. 2010 has been a great year for me, and hopefully 2011 will bring us all the happiness and success!
Tot Ziens!
