Go Outside and Play: A Mom Fights for Her Child’s Right to Recess

Filed under: Health Care — Nancy @ 3:00 am -0800

Recess used to be a staple of elementary school education, but in some cities and states, it’s becoming the exception rather than the norm. And parents are increasingly having to fight for their children’s right to go outside, exercise and partake in the time-honored tradition of play.

As covered on the Education blog, Meg Rosker, a mom in Florida, is one such parent. She is fighting to bring back recess in her child’s school district, where many classrooms are opting not to schedule recess time for kids.

Instead of recess, kindergarteners in Pinellas County, FL, have twice daily “structured activity” breaks, and teachers are left to decide whether kids in first grade and above get free time during lunch. Since many choose not to schedule recess, Rosker decided to take the eldest of her three sons out of his Pinellas County school. Instead, she’s homeschooling — and trying to get 30 minutes of recess re-instated in the schools.

Workers Sick After Company Uses Pesticides to Clean Ambulances

Filed under: Health Care — Nancy @ 3:00 am -0800

An emergency medical technician can face many on-the-job health threats, but pesticides seemingly aren’t one of them. But an ongoing battle between union workers and a hospital service company indicates that workers are exposed to harmful pesticides inside ambulances — and are suffering the health repercussions.

The EPA recently intervened in the ongoing battle between a local union and a New Jersey ambulance company, Monmouth-Ocean Hospital Services Company (MONOC), which uses a micro-mist system to disinfect their ambulances. The system, made by the company Zimek Technologies, sprays tiny particles of the antimicrobial pesticides Sporicidin and Zimek QD throughout the inside of ambulances.

Although Zimek claims that the chemicals leave no toxic residues, workers in these vehicles are  have suffered health problems. The local union, Professional Emergency Medical Services Association (PEMSA), says that up to 100 paramedics were sickened by exposure to the pesticides, with symptoms ranging from skin and eye irritation to asthma, headaches and ulcers.

Ignorance Isn’t Bliss: Boston Students Campaign for Comprehensive Sex Ed

Filed under: Health Care — Nancy @ 3:00 am -0800

In the debate over how to teach sex education in schools, young people’s voices often go unheard. But in Boston, a group of students from the Jamaica Plains neighborhood are making sure they get a say in the matter. In conjunction with the nonprofit Hyde Square Task Force, the students have launched a campaign to demand that a comprehensive sex education program be implemented in all the city’s high schools.

The group made an informative and funny video (after the jump) that interviews students, politicians and public health leaders. In it, they point out that there’s no standardized sexual education in Boston schools, despite the state’s high rate of STDs and teen sexual activity.

In addition to the video, the group is running a Facebook campaign, “Sex in School: Does Ignorance Keep Us Safe?” Among other things, they are demanding a standardized comprehensive sexuality education program beginning in 9th grade, free condom distribution in Boston Public high schools and a student awareness campaign to promote safe sex in all the high schools. One of the main goals of the campaign is to ensure that students are able to weigh-in on the curriculum development and implementation.
