Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
The day started with a trip to Cu Chi tunnels. With really is one of few things on my trip so far that is something I have wanted to do and knew I was going to do. We booked a trip through sin cafe, the same company we had the bus tickets through. And AGAIN what is it with the guides??? They juuust don’t speak good English and is sooo hard to understand. Vietnam would have been soo much better if the guide could just improve their lanuage skills a little bit!
I looooved the tunnels. We learned a lot. We saw plenty of traps that the Vietnamese used and we saw the tunnels. It’s amazing how it’s layed out. 200km with underground tunnels in 3 levels (depths). We have to do some reading on it on the Internet later, because this is something that I would like to learn more about.
I got to try some of the tunnels, however they have a new one that are meant for tourists, double the size. But I got to try to climb into the hole of a real one, and just let me say that no way a normal American man could fit into that hole.
Saigon is a very strange city. It looks so much like a modern city but of course it also has it’s old parts, but the diversety of the city is so big. You have all these nice New York buildings and then you have the little village buildings. I was walking around in the city today and in one end of the centre park there is the normal building we are used to from the rest of Vietnam, but on the other side you have all these New York buildings. I think Saigon is a city that has more or less everyhing you want or need with still keeping the Vietnamese touch.
The streets of the posh area of town were all decorated for new years and I’m sure there were much more to come. It was really nice to look at. I had to take Arild there this evening to show him as well. And he liked it as well. We had dinner at a supposely good Italian restaurant which was expensive as well. And it was NOT worth the money. The air-dried assorted Italian meat we got was just one type of proscitto, the sirloin steak we got was entrecôte with a watery sauce, neither of us liked it. And it was served with french fries. We wanted a dessert, but the food was so bad that we just skipped it! We jumped into a taxi to go the the shop to collect our plane tickets and we juuus made it before they closed. Back in bed I fell asleep straight away.
I’m sooooooo excited about going to Cambodia tomorrow. It’s the highlight of my trip, or the country I have the most expectations to.
