Beijing, China
Day 7
Today the group headed out for the Forbidden City and Tianamen Square. The Forbidden City is so vast and expansive, it has to be seen to be believed, its enormous!! Tianamen Square was a bit of a disappointment, although it is apparently the largest public square in the world (it can hold up to half a million people at once). After spending a few hours in the Forbidden city we went to Jingshan Park. Wow! The views were spectacular. At the top was a small temple and 360 degree views of Beijing, it has to be one of the best views I have seen!! You could see the whole forbidden city from the summit, which really gave a better indication of how big the city is. In the evening we went to see the kung-fu show which was pretty spectacular, with some of the monks performing stunts and acting amongst the audience. After we went to a small restaurant near our hotel.
Day 8
Today was our last day in Beijing. Gary, Scott and me went to the Silk Market which was a great laugh. We really got in some quality haggling practice. I got a t-shirt and shorts, haggling them down from 15 pound each to 4 pound for each item. Scott asked if they had any Portsmouth football t-shirts and they tried to sell him Paul Smith t-shirts (pretty funny if you were there). The Market has 5 floors and a hell of a lot of clothes, shoes, souvenirs and anything really. The stool owners really come right up to you and try to sell hard. If you are interested in something you can really barter hard. It started to rain when we got outside the market, but we continued to walk as it was still quite warm. We spent the evening as a group at a restaurant dining on Peking Duck, which was delicious and there was plenty to go around. We departed from Beijing at 8:30am to get the Shanghai sleeper trains, which had 3-high bunk beds (2 sets of 3 to a cabin). It was pretty cramped but comfortable enough.
