Iraq (ChattahBox) – The BBC is reporting that the death toll in a suicide bombing early this morning on a Baghdad army recruitment center has risen to 59 people, with more than 100 believed to be injured.
The savage attack happened early this morning, when a suicide bomber wandered through the early morning crowd near a bus terminal to an army recruitment center. Hundreds of people were queuing outside, some who had been there since the morning before. They were mostly the unemployed desperately looking for jobs, a situation the military has become a financial saving grace for.
Reports say the explosion was large and happened in the center of the crowd, causing massive devastation. The scene is described as bloody, with both U.S. and Iraqi soldiers rushing to give aid to the wounded, and close off the area from the relatives of those who were attacked.
The bombing comes a day after the majority seat holders in parliament ended talks on forming a coalition government, continuing the political uncertainty which is increasing tension in the region.
Though sectarian violence is down, an increasing number of attacks have occurred in July and August, including a string of daily attacks the last two weeks.
This comes amidst questions of the U.S.’s next move, and whether we will begin to withdraw and hand power to the Iraqi government and military, or if we will be asked to stay.
